Sarah Jane Chambers

Director of Music | Ursuline Academy of Dallas

Since 1984, after 11 years as a music teacher, Sarah Jane Chambers has excelled in her role as the director of music at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, where she’s guided thousands of students through her mission of providing profound learning experiences. Developing deep bonds with her students, whom she considers family, she’s now even teaching the grandchildren of some of her very first students, creating a cycle of learning and connection through generations, the impact of which goes beyond the classroom.

In 2017, with a vision to grant students the opportunity to perform internationally and see them grow, Ms. Chambers dedicated nearly a year and a half to making this a reality. Her goal was to secure an invitation for her vocal group to perform at the Vatican in Rome. To prepare, she meticulously selected appropriate literature and collaborated with talented instrumentalists, including a violinist who had performed at Carnegie Hall. Through her determination and hard work, she engaged various contacts and utilized resources, culminating in a comprehensive application package that showcased her students’ talents and the school’s history.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Chambers has long been active in the music community, having been part of a performing group called the Richardson Community Band, located in a suburb of Dallas, since 1977, longer than she’s been at Ursuline. Over the past 45 years, she has served as the section leader of the flutes and was offered the role of associate conductor in 1991, which she has held for 34 years. She’s also been active as a founding member of the Texas Private School Music Educators Association since 1992.

Attributing her success to a strong foundation laid by her loving and supportive parents, Roger and Frances Marie, Ms. Chambers recalled how their encouragement allowed her to pursue her passion for music without hesitation. Their involvement in the community and the admiration expressed by their friends inspired her to set a similar goal for herself. Despite facing the tragic loss of both parents at a young age, she cherishes the memories of their dedication and the impact they had on those around them, which continues to motivate her in her own pursuits.

Looking ahead, Ms. Chambers intends to stay active after she retires, planning to mentor others and serve as a guest conductor. Wanting to continue sharing her knowledge and insight with schools and young musicians, she also loves to travel and wants to keep exploring new places. She encourages future generations to pursue their goals without fear, reminding students to identify what they want to do and take the time to research the possibilities. In addition, she emphasized the importance of not being discouraged by hearing “No” and to not fear changing paths if their interests shift, particularly in the arts. She likes to highlight that music often remains a central part of people’s lives, even in other fields, citing the frequent statistic that music is the top hobby for medical students.
